We had another great week in first grade! We continue to get to know each other and build our classroom community. It has been a joy getting to know this bunch of kiddos--I can't wait to see what this year has in store.
In math we've practiced our counting skills and subitizing numbers. We learned two new games: Monster Squeeze and Penny Plate. In Monster Squeeze students practiced comparing numbers using a number line. In Penny Plate students practiced counting and using new tools: dice and pennies. We also learned about Pattern Block Templates which are always a hit! Students use these templates to reason with shapes. Students spent time exploring and creating their own designs!
In Social Studies we created our classroom rules. We spent almost all week doing this! We started by sorting PAX and Spleems (expected and unexpected behaviors). Then students brainstormed the rules they wanted our class to follow. We created a giant list! We then went through and stated all of our rules as a positive (instead or "don't hit or kick"--"have a safe body"). After that we sorted out rules into three main ideas. Our class decided on be safe, be kind, be ready to learn. We then drew pictures of what it means to follow each of these rules. It is a long but meaningful process for our classroom. We spent the better half of the our afternoons this week on this task and the class was very patient and thoughtful in each step. (PICTURE COMING SOON) Comments are closed.
